Newsletter Fall '03

Newsletter Fall 2003

Sorry for not getting the newsletter out for like a year and a half, I know we suck. PJ has been busy not only running the camp, but getting the new restaurant, Slippery Pete's open. I will take over the newsletters and try and get them out in a more timely manner.

Kyle.

Everyone probably has a pretty good idea of what it's like around here in the busy season, but did you ever wonder what the coaches do in the off season?

Picture this, there aren't a lot of students, the weather is killer, we usually have a little extra cash, a lot of ideas and a serious desire to ride, ride, ride. Well, here's what our guys came up with for their first project in "how to hurt yourself on a board 801".

Now, to the important stuff. Off peak pricing starts September 15th and runs through February 15th, 2004. We have come up with some really good deals this year again. The base price for a week of riding in the warm Florida sun goes down to $1000. You still get the same world class coaching from guys like Schmidt, Reed, Robertson and Greenwood, great grub (food that is, not Brian) and riding behind our four Malibu Wakesetter VLX’s and Sea Doo 4Tec, as you would in the peak season, it's just cheaper this time of year. Then, if you can round up a friend or two, the price goes down even more. Don’t forget, we ride year round and the cold weather we experience down here is more like the spring and fall up north, except our water is probably a little warmer and our lakes are a little less crowded.

Here’s how it works...

Group Discounts

FREE WEEK CONTEST WINNER

We have a winner. It’s true we actually do give away a free week at the camp every six months. But, the only way to win is to be on the list.

HYPERLITE AND PERFORMANCE SKI AND SURF
Hyperlite and Accurate are fully hooking up the camp for the third year now! The new product is arriving now. When it’s all here we will have over 48 wakeboards, 40 pairs of bindings, Accurate ropes and handles, vests, Landlock and Broadcast wakesurfers, and the Byerly and Grubb wakeskate series. As far as we know, it is the biggest fleet of demo equipment any wakeboard camp in the world. Our delivery service called and said the first shipment alone weighs over 750 lbs. That’s a lot of gear.
It’s a great time to try out all the new stuff from Hyperlite while getting great instruction at the same time. Performance Ski & Surf, our local shop offers discounts to anybody who attends camp. So if you find something you like during your stay with us, you can get a good deal when we make the weekly OWC cable park/ Performance run.
Once all of the new stuff arrives, the old demo fleet will be for sale at Performance Ski & Surf. Please contact them for some killer deals on some slightly used product.

MALIBU
It’s official, we are full on Malibu now with four VLX’s sittin in the lake ready to go. This is the first time since we opened in 96 that we have a full line of kick ass wakeboard boats like this. If you have been thinking of buying one of these dream machines, come check out ours. Then if you like em, let us know, we’ll help you get hooked up with one of our demo models. Just e-mail us at info@wakeboardcamp.com and we’ll get you the details. Or view them at http://www.wakeboardcamp.com/boats4sale.shtml

SEA DOO We also have the brand new four stroke Sea Doo GTX 4Tec. This boat is so powerful, quiet and smooth, it actually makes wakeskating easier and more fun. Aaron and the whole Cassette team has been ripping it behind this boat all summer.

COACHES
We have a more coaches spending the winter training with us this year than ever before.

Ben Greenwood will spend his second year shredding the wakes of Lake Minneola. If you haven’t noticed, Ben is starting to get the respect he deserves and is getting a lot of coverage in the mags and videos. Ben’s style is so good I ask him what clothes I should wear. When he’s not here coaching, he is traveling to all the pro tour stops and video shoots. Look for some cool helicopter footage from Washington state and some sick sections in upcoming videos. We love Ben! He’s so nice.

This is my 8th season here at the camp and I gotta say, this has been a great year. My nine month old daughter Ellex is a new inspiration for my girlfriend, Jen and I. She makes us smile everyday.

I have been busy spreading the knowledge here at the camp and have taken on the job as instructional editor at Wakeboarding Magazine this year and will continue for the 2004 season. So look for another round of instructional articles to get you further into my brain and the Matrix. Remember, there is no spoon. Hey guys and girls, I finally got a pro model wakeboard! Hard work does pay off! I am stoked on it and hopefully you will be too. Please buy them so Ellex can eat.

Aaron Reed.......where do I start? The guy is blowing up. His antics keep us on our toes and his skills has got the wakeskate industry on it’s toes. Aaron has some of wakeskatings’ most respected forefathers chasing him down. I haven’t seen anybody progress that fast in the sport since Mike Mclin. First, he made his movie debut in the DVD “My Side” by Sean Kilgus and then the videos and sponsors just poured in. Then he narrated and rode in the Bump Films wakeskate instructional “Snap”. If you haven’t seen this one, get it. It is so good.

He has been nipping at the toes of Hyperlite team wakeskater Brian Grubb all year, but Aaron has only managed to pull off seconds on his pro tour journey towards wakeskate stardom. Don’t worry Aaron, we all know who’s the best. Aaron will be here at the camp all year teaching wakeskating, so if you want to come down and wakeskate your brains out, Aaron will love you for it! You can also check out Aaron in the Cassette team video “Sfumato” and the Alliance Wakeboard Magazine video “Invisible Cinema” by Chase Heavener at “Attention Deficit”.

The Kiwis keep a comin. Kurt Robertson leads the way and has been busy making a name for himself in the industry as top instructor. Kurt has been around the longest behind PJ and myself. He has really picked up on the physics and mellow composure of effortless wakeboarding. It’s nice when you can easily make sense of the words coming out of a coaches mouth and get instant results. He was involved in the wakeskate video “SNAP” by Bump Films, has gotten some coverage in Wakeboarding Magazine, and has qualified to compete in the Worlds in October.

Kiwi newcomer Jason MacArthur, along with his dreadlock braiding skills, is learning tricks left and right, or switch and regular in his case. No, he doesn’t like guys, not that there’s anything wrong with that! Some people just get good fast.

Lance Blackmore is back from summer in New Zealand where he traveled all over the place doing clinics and contests for On board He then went to Europe to judge the Swedish nationals. Word has it, he was so good at judging the riding, that he will be judging the tryouts for the Swedish Bikini Team next year.

Thanks to Dave Burstiner, Chad Morin, and Kris Northrup for all of their coaching skills and help during our busy season. Also thanks to our team riders Keith Lyman and Megan McNeil for spreading the word about the camp. If there is anybody out there that is interested in coaching next spring and summer please send us an e-mail. You must be at least 21 years of age and have some coaching experience. E-mail info@wakeboardcamp.com for more information.

Jessica Cottam our bookkeeper/office manager/head chef extraordinaire, would like everyone in Europe to know that if you know any great places to visit, she is making the trip and will be traveling abroad. Don’t ask, she told me to write this. Anastasia and Belinda are also helping around the camp and man can these girls can cook. We eat so good here at the camp. Thanks ladies, for keeping the campers happy and us healthy, so we can all ride like rock stars.

Slippery Pete’s is about to become a reality. This lakefront restaurant and bar will be a great place to relax, tell stories and watch our beautiful Florida sunsets after a day on the lake. It’s expected to be up and running before Christmas. First camp director, now restaurant owner, what’s next for PJ? Hollywood? Actually, maybe. There are plans for a wakeboarding feature film as we speak and the producers are considering the camp for a possible location. We’ll let you know.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.
